INDIANAPOLIS, IN. / THE MURAT THEATRE (01-21-09)

Last night was very encouraging for us kids. We are trying our damnedest to write songs for our third record in between touring and for us, an integral part of the creative process is playing the new songs live. Considering that we spend most all our time on the road playing shows, it allows us to evaluate the songs from the vantage point we are most accustomed to. We are also looking for the material that’s the most fun for us to perform seeing that we’ll spend the next years of our lives nightly playing the songs that make it onto the record.

Anyway, so it’s hard to find where to work the new songs into the set. What new songs sound better when placed between certain old songs, and what old song to cut so that we have time to play a new one. Opening these shows for the Kings of Leon are also the biggest shows we’ve ever played so its slightly strange playing songs that are 48 hours old in front of a few thousand people. Considering that we spend our days driving the van and sound-checks are short, the only time we have to actually play guitar, bass, and drums is when we step onstage in front of a live crowd. It’s a huge rush playing the new songs to so many people and the feeling of performing songs for the first time is one of the main reasons why we make music.

Enough blabbing. My point was that last night was really exciting for us to play the new songs and the crowd was ready to have fun with us. Props to Indianapolis.
