The debut album recorded by the Whigs in the summer of 2005 at the Ross Crane House in Athens, GA. With zero dollars in their pocket, the band bought recording equipment on eBay, recorded on it for a couple months, then sold the equipment back on eBay for a small profit. The result was the primal “Give “Em All A Big Fat Lip” which was self-released by the Athens trio in November 2005 and later re-released by ATO Records in September 2006.

After spending 2006 and half of 2007 on the road, the Whigs headed to Los Angeles in the summer of 2007 to craft their second record, “Mission Control.” Instead of the empty fraternity house used to record “Fat Lip,” the band holed up in Hollywood’s legendary Sunset Sound / The Sound Factory for two months. The studio, which has played host to rock artists such as the Doors, Janis Joplin, and Led Zeppelin provided the Whigs with a historic backdrop for the construction of their second record. Produced and mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Guided By Voices) and engineered / mixed by Doug Boehm (French Kicks), the record was released in January of 2008 by ATO Records.

“In the Dark” is a homegrown beast. Recorded in their hometown of Athens, Georgia during the summer of 2009, the original Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter) produced sessions were merged with two Nashville sessions produced by Jay Joyce and Angelo Petraglia respectively. The resulting album brings a twist of rock darkness and psychedelia to the Whigs signature southern rock sound.

After a few week break for holidays, etc., we got to play our first shows of the year these past few days in Oxford, Mississippi and Huntsville, AL. Jason Isbell made the drive from Muscle Shows and joined us for Right Hand On My Heart, Try (off Jason’s album “Sirens in the Ditch”), and Need You Need You. ROCK!
